How exciting! My husband spent a year in Thailand and fell in love with the people and the country. He taught English in some of the schools there through a volunteer group. I think it changed him fundamentally as a person. My in laws went to Vietnam last February doing charity work with micro-loans and building schools, and are going back in a few weeks. It now olds such a special place in my heart from the stories they've shared and the experiences they've related.

I don't have much advice, seeing how I've never been, but Cade says it's the beginning of the raining season so you might expect some rain off and on. I remember my in-laws visited Ho Chi Minh City and some of the museums and stuff, and said that it was obviously still pretty Anti-American. They were able to see some of the tunnels from the war & such and shoot some cool guns.

I've been reading about Operation Babylift, where the US government airlifted hundreds of Vietnamese orphans to the US during the Vietnam war, right before the US left. Incredibly sad and touching all at once. Vietnam is truly spectacular. I can't wait til I can go.

Good luck! My husband traveled with a Canadian flag patch on his bags, and always identified himself as a Canadian (which is partially true, his mom is Canadian). He felt like it just made things a bit smoother. I think my in laws do the same. I hope you have smooth travel and wonderful experiences!

Melisa - wow! Thanks for the thoughts. I will make sure to take pics and confirm all the cool things you've only heard about ;) Ha. I'd love to do some sort of Humanitarian gig while I'm there. That would be seriously rad.

Andrea - my friend Terilyn. We are in the market for a dude or two - ya know - for intimidation of creepers we may encounter. :)

Lucky you! It's always nice to have a warm vacation to look forward to during the cold winter months. Carlton and I are going to Thailand in 3 years so I can't wait to hear all about it from you and see your pictures.

Andrea - serious? Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam? You are aware that I spent quite some time in all three places? We'll have to talk...

Oh yes Rachelle I recall! You must make me lists. Or I should come visit. Yes.

Hi Andrea! So much to say about this... we had such a WONDERFUL time in Ko Samui and still talk about it all the time. So, ENJOY yourself!!

A few tips to take or leave at your leisure: Check out Air Asia for cheap hopper flights around the region... You can do Angkor Wat in a day and still enjoy it... my friend played with baby Bengal tigers in a zoo in Laos and LOVED it... bring US dollars to Cambodia, and don't leave with any riel... spend at least a full week on the beach in Thailand--any less and you'll feel like you're cheating yourself... less time in Vietnam is recommended... don't worry about Bangkok--honestly, it's not that great, even for shopping (malls are similar to high end US malls)... plan for lots of downtime for cheap massages (oh, and be sure to ask to look at the room to make sure its legitimate...you don't want a room with a mattress on the floor, a red light on the ceiling, and a peep hole in the back wall.....*shudder*). Relax, and enjoy all the pineapple pancakes and banana shakes you can handle..... MMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmm.........
